THE  CHARTER,  1887

Transcribed from the original by E. Corning, 1997. The original went with the hall. Words lost to water are marked.

In the year of our Lord 1887, the first month, the heads of eight families of the valley, being of one mind concerning the ground and the reading of it, do gather themselves as the Children of the Second Heaven, and do covenant as follows:

FIRST. That the Children shall keep the low ground and the water that rises there, and shall suffer no strange use of it, forever.

SECOND. That the Children hold the ground of him who held it first; and the families are gathered to the service of him whom the old books name ADRAMMELECH, which is to say, the king; and the KING shall have of the Children what is owed, on the eighth day, at the water. [several words lost]

THIRD. That in consideration thereof the families shall have quiet enjoyment of the valley, and increase in due season, and shall not be removed. The right of way to the water, being the easement recorded at Bk A, Pg 1, is reserved to the Children and to their successors forever, and conveys with no deed.

FOURTH. That the name of the KING as he is named in the ground is not set down in this charter, nor in any writing of the Children, nor shall be; and what the old books name him is the old books' affair, and not ours. [seal, bearing the words TERRA CUSTODITUR]

FIFTH. That the Children shall conclude their keeping when the covenant is satisfied, and not before; and that one shall remain; and of the one nothing further is written. [a line follows in mirror-hand, and is not transcribed]

Set down at the hall, the 9th day of January, 1887, and signed by the heads of the eight families, whose names are entered in the rolls.
